I believe that Empathy is the most essential gift of civilisation
Robert Egbert
Empathy is emotional intelligence. It is the ability to step into someone else’s shoes, to view the world through another’s eyes. To be able to perceive the feelings and emotions of another and convey that understanding to the other person.
The word and definition “empathy” was created in the early 1900’s by pioneer scientific psychologists. Since that time, the definition has continued to transform and expand.
When we develop the ability to empathise with one another, we begin to understand a fundamental truth that allows us to recognise that we are a part of something larger. That we are interconnected within an intricate web of relationships extending throughout life and the Universe.
I believe that every human being on this planet can develop empathy, and it may be the next stage of humanity’s evolution.
Empathy is developed through the opening of the heart chakra, which allows a person to adopt a heart-centred approach to life.
The “way of the heart” or the “path of the heart” is living life from values that are based on love and acceptance, kindness and compassion towards others. It means that our hearts are open and we inspire kindness and compassion in others. We create a safe and supportive environment.
Others can feel our love and warmth. They feel loved and accepted unconditionally. People feel at peace around us, as there is no judgment coming from us through our ability to empathise.
When we live from a heart-centred place, we are not only more loving to others; we are also more loving to ourselves. We know when we need to say no and when we need care and self-nurturing.
Empathy is the vehicle through which we express our love and acceptance, kindness and compassion to others around us. The use of empathy to convey love and acceptance, kindness and compassion is the key to removing all barriers and walls we build up between ourselves.
When we look at our collective world and our history as a civilisation, it becomes clear that a lack of empathy and understanding for one another is the number one reason for the chaos, violence, wars, death and destruction that have and continue to blight our planet.
We have viewed ourselves as separate from one another and created borders, barriers and walls that cause nothing but tension and disharmony in the name of power and control.
Indeed, a lack of empathy for our planet, which is home to all of us, which continues to be destroyed in humanity’s drive for power and control, could result in our extinction further down the line. This is why the evolution of the human race through the gift of empathy and heart-centred living is becoming essential.
We can also begin to understand how a lack of empathy and understanding for one another can negatively manifest in our own world, through our interactions with others.
In any interaction where an individual shows a lack of empathy towards another, a divide or wall is created through which love, kindness and compassion cannot flow. Empathy is the vehicle which allows love to flow between us.
Imagine a world where empathy was a quality instilled in every human being. Where every human being used their gift of empathy as a vehicle for love, compassion and kindness to flow between each other and every living thing on this planet. Our world would be transformed. We would no longer see each other through labels and judgment; there would be no walls or barriers between us. If every person in the world became empathic and used their gift, we wouldn’t be able or want to hurt one another.
